When I was in Thailand, I often ate vegan Som Tam, papaya salad. Beautifully refreshing! Traveling in Thailand is very nice for vegetarians and vegans anyway. There are so many options for when you don’t want to eat meat, fish or animal products.
Ingredients for 2 people Som Tam
- ½ papaya
- 1 carrot
- 2 tomatoes
- Handful of green beans or pieces of long beans
- 2 to 3 limes
- 6 cloves of garlic
- Handful of peanuts
- 3 to 4 red peppers
- ½ tsp palm sugar (white or brown caster sugar can also be used)
- 1 tbsp mushroom sauce (Healthy Boy Brand, at toko)
Preparation som tam Thai papaya salad
- Cut the papaya in half and remove the seeds
- Using a potato peeler, remove the skin from the papaya
- Make carrot and papaya strings with a special grater (you can also use a knife)
- Put the papaya and carrot strands in a bowl along with the green beans or long beans
- Put the chilies and garlic cloves in a mortar crush well
- Add sugar and mushroom sauce and continue bruising
- Add lime juice and mix well
- Put contents of mortar in bowl with papaya strands and green beans
- Crush everything a little with the pestle and mix everything together well
- Add diced tomato, continue to bruise and mix together
- Add half the peanuts and continue crushing and mixing again
- Scoop up and sprinkle with peanuts as garnish
